That Night

There was the scent of you

Under startling August stars

Confused with lilac and dew

both of us tremulous

as a tear on a leaf tip

What right of me to ask

For the rest of your life

The future ahead of us unshod

The past a short glance back

There was the look of you

Through the moonlight spears

Darling eyes so unabashedly bright

our hands loosely twined

too sober for miracles or flippancy

How could we dare

How could we not

Is this the way the world begins?

Not with bindings and promises

But expectancy and faith.
