There it is

There’s a poem in there

Like a nut in a shell

Hard and rough on the outside

Get the nutcracker and a pick

We’ll wedge it out together.

There’s a poem in there

Just beyond the light

Cowering, timid and unwilling

If we walk past whispering sweetly

The two of us might lure it out.

There’s a poem in there

Pulsing like a heart

Strong and soft as flesh

We can hear it softly beating

In the words we speak aloud.

There’s a poem in there

In the distance between us

We could build a bridge of words

Meet in the middle

Then walk both ends holding hands

There’s a poem in there

Like a nut in a shell

Just beyond the light

Pulsing like a heart

In the distance between us.

There’s a poem in there

In the corner of our eyes

We can see it rushing past

Tempting us to catch it quickly

And tame it and each other.
